Reading an Ingredient List Without a Chemistry Degree

Skincare labels look intimidating because they use a standard naming system. Once you know how it works, the list becomes useful rather than frightening.

The naming system

Cosmetic labels in many markets use the International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients (INCI) to name ingredients. The names are standardised, so the same ingredient carries the same name on every product, often in its Latin or chemical form.

Order matters

Ingredients are generally listed in descending order of concentration, with rules for very small amounts that vary by region. The first few items make up most of the product.

What a soap label tells you

"Natural" is not a regulated promise

The word natural has no single legal definition in most markets. Read the list, not the front of the box.

Fragrance and sensitive skin

Essential oils are natural, and they are also concentrated plant compounds that some people react to. If your skin is sensitive, start with unscented products and patch test anything new.
