An Unhurried Evening Routine, With Limits That Protect It
A calm evening is a small ritual: warm water, a good bar of soap, a slower hour. It works best when the things that eat into it have limits too.
Build the ritual
- Set a time to start winding down, and keep it most nights.
- Wash with warm, not hot, water and a gentle soap.
- Pat skin dry and apply a simple moisturiser while it is still slightly damp.
- Dim the lights and choose one calm activity: reading, music, a bath.
Protect it from screens
The quickest way to lose an evening is a phone with no end to it. Put the phone to charge outside the bedroom, or set a time after which notifications are silenced.
Limits for evening entertainment
Online games, shopping and anything involving chance are designed to keep you a little longer. Decide in advance how much time and money they get, and stop when you reach it. A practical set of limits, written in Traditional Chinese, is a guide to setting time and spending limits on online entertainment and noticing when play stops being fun (理性娛樂上限設定). The principles are the same for any late-night habit.
If it has stopped being a choice
If gambling is costing you sleep, money or peace of mind, talk to someone. In the US, the National Council on Problem Gambling's helpline is 1-800-MY-RESET. Elsewhere, look for your national helpline.
Self-care is not only what you add to an evening. It is also what you decide to leave out.
